Puzzle 2

A man was out hiking. He set up camp, and realized he had nothing to eat. He decided to hunt for bears, since he loved bear meat. He walked 50 miles south from his camp. Then he ran 50 miles west. There he finally shot a bear. He then carried the bear 50 miles north all the way back to his camp. What color was the bear?

CAVEAT : There is more than one place his camp could be!

  1. Solution : There are actually an infinite number of places his camp could be. We are searching for places where 50m south,50m west and then 50m north lead you back to the same place. The North Pole is one such place.
However, consider the latitude just above the S Pole, where the circumference of the Earth is 50m. Start from any point 50m North of this circle.
Even better, consider places where circumference is 25m, 12.5m, and so on.
But (luckily) there are no bears near the S pole, so he must have been at the N pole, where there are only polar bears. So the bear was white!
